Self-Catering Holidays: The Hottest Way to Travel

November 29, 2009 by finance1024

Even if “self-catering” is an unfamiliar term to you, you may at least be familiar with the concept. The idea became mainstream in the 2006 movie “The Holiday,” however; self-catered travelling has actually been around in one form or another for decades.

Thanks in large part to the Internet’s ability to considerably shrink geographical distances and make communication and the trading of services faster and easier, self-catered vacations have seen a tremendous surge in popularity in the last decade. Tourists who choose this style of travel forego the tradition of making vacation arrangements through a travel agent, who would normally perform services like booking a hotel, reserving a sight-seeing package, etc.

Instead, travelers book accommodations directly from a private owner or from a specialist villa holiday company who will put vacationers up in a home or condominium/apartment. As often than not, vacationers find their contacts through an Internet listing.

So why is the self-catered holiday the new ticket to a great vacation? The trend continues to catch fire with travellers worldwide for a number of reasons, including:

* Flexibility: Dealing directly with a private owner often means travelers get a better pick of travel dates. It’s also easier to negotiate deals when it comes to length of stay, inclusiveness of a package and other things that wouldn’t be possible with a hotel stay. It’s also a great way to accommodate large families or groups of travelers without having to separate groups.

* Privacy: Choosing self-catered accommodations means not having to worry about nosy neighbors in close proximity or the sound of the ice machine down the hall at 2:00 am. Your accommodations are yours and yours alone. You also get a much more “homey” feeling than you might with a hotel room.

* Freedom: There’s no need to worry about meal schedules because you’re cooking for yourself, or you can simply choose a local restaurant at your own convenient time.

* Cost efficiency: This is one of the biggest reasons that travellers choose self-catered holidays. Dealing with a private owner almost always means you get a better rate than you would in a hotel. Places such as Mallorca, where many of the best hotels are close to the coast, travelers will pay a prime rate for beachfront property. However, if you go inland to a self-catered private home or condominium, you’re much more likely to find a better rate; without having to sacrifice quality. Chances are, you’ll still be only minutes from major amenities, shopping and sightseeing destinations.

Since your accommodation includes a kitchen facility, you have the option of saving money by cooking at least some of your own meals during your stay. Even if you choose to eat out, you’ll probably be paying less for meals than you would at a hotel restaurant or with room service. Sometimes you can negotiate a better rate with a private owner, especially if you plan to stay for an extended period of time (a week or more). Plus, you get an entire residence for the duration of your stay rather than just one or two rooms and a restroom.

And don’t think that your choices are limited just because you’re choosing a non-traditional hotel vacation. There are self-catered accommodations all over the world with added features like a swimming pool, home gym, games room, entertainment center and many extras. Whatever kind of vacation you want, you’re sure to find accommodations that suit your desires.

Just what kind of impact self-catered holidays are having on the hotel and hospitality industry is difficult to determine. The hotel industry in Spain continues to grow, despite the rising number of travellers who are choosing self-catered accommodations.

However, since the number of vacationers who have opted out of hotel stays for their holidays has also grown over the last several years, it may be a safe assumption that the tourism industry in Spain as a whole is growing. In fact, it’s quite possible that the number of recreational tourists in Spain is on the rise because vacationers have so many options when it comes to accommodation and more people can now afford to travel than ever before. Whatever the case, it appears that self-catered holidays will continue to be a desirable and affordable way to travel and the tourism industry will be benefitted, rather than hurt, by this trend.

Bad Eco-Tourism Does More Harm Than Good

November 22, 2009 by finance1024

Tourism is a booming industry. With many travellers flocking to different destinations around the globe, tourism is becoming one of the most viable business markets in the world. However, air travel, car travel and other aspects of tourism are adding to the planet’s pollution crisis and this is becoming a problem. Travel operators and hospitality corporates realised that some action needed to be taken, and Eco-tourism was created as a solution to this problem.

Eco-tourism is now one of the fastest growing sectors of the tourism industry. Eco-tourism involves the conservation of biological and cultural diversity through education of locals and tourists alike. By protecting ecosystems it has had a positive effect on the local communities and their livelihoods through their participation in projects and lessening the impact on the environment.

Why Eco-Tourism?
A tourist operator who offers eco-tourism is basically an operator who makes no negative impact on the environment and helps to sustain and promote the life of the local ecosystems.

Their activities should not pollute the local surroundings and have a mutually beneficial relationship with local residents through education of how to sustain themselves without damaging the environment. In South Africa, teaching locals how to make crafts from empty cans and used containers to minimise litter and help create a source of income is one example of this. The tour operator should also be involved in the education of locals concerning the environment and teaching them how to live in harmony with it, instead of destroying it.

There are many benefits to eco-tourism, yet many hospitality providers claim they offer eco-tourism holidays and accommodation when they do not. Governments and tourism providers are leaning towards the promotion of anything which involves nature as eco-tourism, allowing activities which are not based upon sustainable development of the environment and communities.

Tourism ventures such as low-impact tourism, green tourism, bio-tourism and ecologically responsible tourism are advertised as eco-tourism when they do not fall under this category realistically.

The Problems with Fake Eco-Tourism
“Green washing” is a term used to describe the occurrence of a tourism operator claiming to offer eco-friendly holidays when they are in fact, environmentally destructive. This practice involves the commercialisation of tourism involving nature and some ecological projects as eco-tourism. Many people flock to these tourism operators and end up doing more damage to the environment than if they had not used a ‘green’ operator. They are destructive towards the environment, are insensitive towards cultural needs and exploit the tourism economy. They are also misleading to tourists as they appeal to the desire to help the environment which tourists have, yet destroy the environment, not giving the tourists what they have asked for.

Despite some operators meeting the guidelines, there may still be a negative impact on the environment and local communities. Eco-tourism operators need to have a thoroughly positive impact on the environment with few, if not no negative impacts. If there is a negative impact, this should be counter acted by some kind of compensatory action such as planting trees and so forth.

South Africa is currently reaping many economic benefits from eco-tourism but there are still problems with displacement of people, violations of constitutional rights and negative impact on the environment from tourism activities.

An eco-tourism operator should be involved in investing in the local ecosystems and conservation. Rejuvenation of the natural resources and the education of locals in living in harmony with these ecosystems is paramount to eco-tourism. Education of tourists, assisting the livelihoods of locals in supporting themselves without negative environmental impact and the conservation of biological and cultural diversity should be not only endorsed but achieved through eco-tourism. Money generated from eco-tourism should also be invested in furthering conservation efforts.

Adventure Tours Throughout The United States And Canada

November 21, 2009 by finance1024

Some vacations just do not cut it with a certain type of traveler; they seek more from their vacation plans. They want to be able to live on the edge, seeing the sights while breaking away from the same types of vacation tours that everyone else is taking. It is for people such as these that adventure tours were created. They combine the tour packages of the past with the thrill-seeking mentality of the modern generation. There are a number of adventure tour destinations available in North America and they are currently rising in popularity. If you think you may be interested in taking one of these tours, then here are some of the most popular options available.

One destination that has always been popular is the Grand Canyon. Unlike the tours that provide you with a view of the beauty and majesty of the canyon from above, however, an adventure tour of the Grand Canyon takes you through the rapids of the Colorado River along the entire length of the canyon. Though the lengths of these tours may vary, a rafting tour of the entire canyon is generally an 8 to 10 day excursion.

Another popular adventure tour destination is Alaska. From ice fishing in northern Alaska to sea kayaking along the coast, there are a number of different adventure options available. Visitors on an adventure tour can view wild bears, take hikes through the Alaskan wilderness, raft a variety of rivers, and camp in some of the most rugged wilderness locations in North America. The length of Alaskan adventure tours can vary greatly depending on the activities involved, with some tours lasting for as few as 3 days to as many as 12.

Given the adventurous history of the American west, it should come as no surprise that there are a number of western-themed adventure tours to choose. Some of these involve visiting a number of historical Wild West locations while others focus on the western deserts and hiking through some of the amazing national parks in Arizona and Nevada. Other western tours actually manage to incorporate adventure locations in several states, letting you visit some of the most majestic locations in the west to see their beauty firsthand. The length of the western adventure tours depend largely on the area that they cover, with some lasting only 2 or 3 days while others can last for 1 to 2 weeks.

For those who are seeking a more modern adventure, there are adventure tours which can allow you to explore cities Las Vegas, Reno, and other similar hotspots. The focus of these adventure tours is not only on the sights and sounds of the main cities themselves, but also on the history and majesty of the surrounding land. Most adventure tours to Las Vegas and Reno last from 3 to 7 days and generally include trips to the most popular casinos and shows in addition to hiking in the surrounding desert. This allows one to gain a better appreciation for the cities, which appear as jewels upon the desert.

A number of different California adventures are available as well, helping visitors to see exactly how diverse the state really is. Adventures in the major cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco allow the opportunity to explore the forests and vineyards in the northern portion of the state. Most visitors are amazed at exactly what California has to offer in the way of adventure opportunities. A number of hiking tours can be found that allow you to visit some of the most majestic California locations on foot, letting you camp under the open sky while on your way to your final destination. California adventure tours can last for as few as 3 days to as many as 14 depending on the area being covered by the tour.

Of course, not all adventure tours involve hiking, rafting, or spending time traversing the natural lands of North America; a number of adventure tour companies also offer RV rental so that you can take a driving tour of some of the classic roadways in America and Canada. This allows you to travel in comfort while taking in some amazing sights and visiting places that you otherwise may not have known existed. RV adventure tours generally last for as long as you want to rent the RV. The average length of an RV tour is typically between 5 to 14 days.

There are many benefits to planning an adventure vacation. If you enjoy the thrill of adventure, this vacation may be right for you. Available activities range from hiking and kayaking to exploring cities such as Las Vegas and California, but this type of trip may require renting an RV. If you are interested in extreme sports, you may enjoy a vacation, which consists of hiking and kayaking. Those adventures provide the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime moment, that can be remembered for many years.

Dry Skin Is Thirsty and Other Useful Tips

November 19, 2009 by finance1024

Skin is not dry because it lacks oil, but because it lacks water. Only a lucky few have ‘normal’ skin; the rest of us have a dry, oily or combination variety; if dryness is your problem, read on.

Dry skin happens more often in the winter where the cold air outside and the hot air inside creates a low relative humidity.

Skin contains the hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands and blood vessels. The average square inch of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels, 60,000 melanocytes, and more than a thousand nerve endings. Skin is considered one of the most important parts of the body.

The outermost layer of epidermis consists of 25 to 30 layers of dead cells. The epidermis contains no blood vessels, and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the upper layers of the dermis.

The epidermis can be further subdivided into the following strata (beginning with the outermost layer): corneum, lucidum (only in feet), granulosum, spinosum, and basale.

Bathing or showering too frequently, especially if one is using harsh soaps, may also contribute to xeroderma (dry skin). Xeroderma can also be caused by a deficiency of vitamin A, systemic illness, overexposure to sunlight or some medications. Dry skin is common.

Apply moisturizers just after a bath or shower, when your skin is still damp. Use as little soap as possible limiting its use to armpits and genitals. Dry your skin gently and thoroughly, patting not rubbing.

Drink plenty of water, a minimum of a quart a day. The two most common, sluggish, digestion culprits that affect your skin are not enough water and not enough fiber. Put two tablespoons of coconut oil in your smoothies. Eat at least one organic apple with the skin on every day. Fatty acids are particularly important to people with dry skin.

Use coconut oil to remove your make-up at night, like I do; it leaves a fine layer of oil to nourish your skin all night long. If you also have eczema or acne, coconut oil will treat those skin conditions too.

It just takes motivation, a willingness to try it, and diligent application of coconut oil several times daily and at bedtime to see its benefits. Apply a thin layer of coconut oil and massage it deep into the skin.

The skin must be regularly cleaned or it’ll become cracked or inflamed. Dry skin can be converted into healthy skin using natural home remedies.

Unclean skin favors the development of pathogenic organisms – the dead cells that continually slough off of the epidermis mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin to form a filthy layer on its surface.

Continue using coconut oil and the benefits of good, clear skin, free of dryness and other skin conditions should be your reward .You should see the results with improved skin within a few days following this advice. Make sure to call your dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal.

How Exercise Affects Acne

November 18, 2009 by finance1024

Exercise and acne, is there a connection? I am sure you will agree, that is an interesting thought. It is also quite a hotly debated subject.

Well, let us try to find out and see what we come up with. On the one hand, the workout that you have chosen to go through is likely to make your skin sweaty and greasy. Now that would be a perfect setting for acne to develop!

Acne and lifestyle in your hands. On the other hand, if you consider the option of turning into a couch potato with your attention centered on the television set, that does not look like a particularly healthy choice, does it? There has been a fair amount of research to try and establish the effect of exercise on acne. The results of one such study conducted fairly recently seemed to suggest that there could be individual variations in the extent to which acne is affected by exercise.

A study carried out on two groups of participants, one that went through an exercise routine and another that did not, and did not find any significant connection between exercise and breakouts of acne. However, since this is still a disputed subject, you could play safe by ensuring that you minimize the likelihood of developing acne through exercise.

Acne, putting you in a spot? Possibly you have begun to feel that this is a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea if you do not exercise, you have an unhealthy lifestyle; if you do, you run the risk of developing acne because of the very activity that you have taken up to improve your health.

Well, whichever of these theories turns out to be the right one, you can certainly take steps to avoid putting yourself at risk of developing acne. That will not take a whole lot of doing. You just need to follow a few simple rules:

Fight acne keep your hair away from your face. The sweat and grease that is built up after exercise can affect your hair and scalp as well and may run down onto your face. This will be further aggravated by any hair care product you may have used such as hair spray etc.

Take steps to ensure that your hair does not touch your face and neck while you are exercising; this will at least give you a head start in cutting down the chances of developing acne through exercise, if indeed it can happen at all.

Select your exercise equipment carefully because it could give you acne. Try to avoid using exercise equipment that rubs against your skin, as there is some evidence that this kind of friction could encourage acne to develop. Then again, particularly if you are working out in a public place such as a gym, do ensure that the equipment you are using is clean.

In a situation where the same equipment is being used by several people, you are open to the risk of picking up germs left by other people.

Keep your clothing light for workouts unless you want acne. Make sure that the clothes you wear when you are working out are light, loose and comfortable. This again will avert the possibility of friction with the skin and allow the skin to breathe. Tight clothing will cause unnecessary problems, even if it does not actually contribute to your developing acne.

Shower as soon as possible in order reduce the risk of developing acne. Do this for the sake of your own health and well being, but also for the sake of anyone else who may be with you. Keeping your skin clean is surely one of the basic rules you must observe for general well being. Dry your skin carefully after showering and avoid rubbing vigorously

Keep your sportswear and linen clean to stay clear of acne. Remember that you should take care to keep the clothes you use for your workouts clean. This is particularly important in the case of headbands and wristbands, which accumulate a great deal of perspiration. Take care to use clean towels as well.

Use oil free products to treat your acne. If you have chosen to use a sunscreen, make sure it does not have an oil base. That will be one sure way of setting the stage for acne to develop once you have finished your workout, as there will be plenty of grease and perspiration on your skin by then.

Exercise can help your acne. Lastly, exercise can in fact have a positive effect on your acne by cutting down the effects of stress and simply making you feel good. When you build up stress, certain hormones are released into the skin, increasing the likelihood of your developing acne.

So, if you had any doubts, remember that exercise is good for you, and ultimately, it will be good for your acne as well, as long as you observe the basic rules of health and hygiene. If you are an exercise freak and have also broken out with acne, keep plugging away and you will see the difference!!

Dry Skin Care – How To Heal Dry Skin Overnight Naturally

November 16, 2009 by finance1024

The use of natural or synthetic cosmetics to cover the appearance of the face and condition of the skin, like pore control and blackhead covering, is common among many cultures. As we age, our skin produces less of the natural oil that helps it retain its moisture.

The dermis is structurally divided into two areas: a superficial area adjacent to the epidermis, called the papillary region, and a deep thicker area known as the reticular region. The outermost layer of epidermis consists of 25 to 30 layers of dead cells. Our skin also receives less blood flow and lower gland activity than the other organs in our body.

When the skin loses moisture it may crack and peel, or become irritated and inflamed. Dry skin can be due to a genetic condition but it’s not common. Environmental factors, such as exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals, or cosmetics, or excessive bathing with harsh soaps, can cause dry skin.

Certain drugs, including diuretics, antispasmodics, and antihistamines, can contribute to dry skin conditions; check with your pharmacist or doctor and read the drug insert – you can get one from your pharmacist. When the oil glands do not supply enough lubrication to the skin, the skin becomes dehydrated. Forced-air furnaces may make skin even drier than it already is.

When the skin is dry and dehydrated, dead skin cells remain on the skin which may block pores and promote acne, zits, blemishes, or other breakouts; drink plenty of pure water. Eating fruits that are red or orange in color will help improve you skin health and help to prevent acne. I put two tablespoons of coconut oil in my smoothies, which are made with fruits only – using a base of two bananas, then adding fruit, frozen or fresh– blend well.

Cosmetics should be used carefully because they may dry out the skin or cause allergic reactions like contact dermatitis; read the labels. Natural treatments should always be the first type of treatments to consider when you want to heal and take the best care of your skin. Only use mild cleansers or mild soaps if you must use a soap or cleanser.

Apply coconut oil to irritated or chapped lips as well; it’s edible, so it’s safe and so healing to the lips. Coconut oil is the best healing, soothing, and moisturizing treatment I’ve found for dry skin; in fact all types of skin conditions, skin eruptions, pimples, acne, milia, irritations, cuts, burns, fungus, etc. To see what coconut oil can do for your skin fast, apply coconut oil several times a day and at bedtime.

When you buy coconut oil, make sure you get the kind that hasn’t been refined, processed and deodorized. If you have acne, eczema or any type of dermatitis coconut oil will treat and quickly heal these skin conditions too.

Skin that’s not clean favors the development of pathogenic organisms; the dead cells continually slough off of the epidermis and mix with the secretions of the sweat and sebaceous glands and the dust found on the skin, to form a layer on its surface. The skin must be regularly cleaned or it’ll become cracked or inflamed.

Call your doctor or naturopath when your skin feels itchy all over your body, with or without a visible rash. Make sure to call your skin doctor or dermatologist when you have any open cuts or sores from scratching that won’t heal. Usually we can take care of dry skin without seeing our doctor, but sometimes we can’t avoid it.

Contact Lenses Money Saving Shopping Tips

November 16, 2009 by finance1024

All correcting contact lenses must have a valid prescription from an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Contact lens wearers are usually surprised and happy with the level of comfort that lenses provide. You’ll want to take simple precautions to make any lens purchase safe and effective.

Among the many kinds of contact lenses you can buy are: novelty, colored, crazy, Halloween, special effects, theatrical, costume, scary, glow in the dark, wild eyes, mirrored, black, white, and red. With a contact lens prescription in hand, it’s possible to buy your contact lenses from stores, the Internet, over the phone, or by mail.

Soft lenses also come as disposable products, that is, used once and discarded, or as planned-replacement lenses. There are differences in the water content and shape of the lens between different brands. If you live an active lifestyle, NIGHT & DAY breathable lenses will allow you 30 hours of continuous wear.

Soft lenses have the added benefit in that soft lenses aren’t as likely as rigid lenses to pop out or get foreign material like dust underneath. Contacts provide for excellent peripheral vision for sports, driving, safety, and performing. Newer soft lens materials include silicone-hydrogels to provide more oxygen to your eyes.

Bifocal correction is possible with both soft and rigid lenses. You can mark rigid lenses to show which lens is for which eye; they don’t rip or tear, so they’re easy to handle. Rigid gas permeable lenses tend to be less expensive over the life of the lens since they last longer than soft lenses.

Disposable lenses don’t come with instructions for cleaning and disinfecting, while those labeled specifically for planned replacement do. In some models, each lens corrects for near and distance vision and in others, one lens is for near vision, and the other is for distance.

When you place your order make sure your lenses are available and not out of stock, because you’ll need them now. Get a feel for how the retailer handles customer service calls; in case you have a problem after your order arrives. There are many good contact lens retailers now on the Internet making their lenses available at a good discount for prescription and non-prescription lenses.

When you place your contact lens order, request the manufacturer’s written patient information for your contact lenses; it’ll give you important risk and benefit information as well as instructions for use. Ask about prices at your doctor’s office when you have your eye examination, or during a follow-up visit after you get your prescription. If you have an insurance plan, the insurance plan’s seller’s prices may or may not be better than what you can find elsewhere; this should be just one option when you’re shopping for lenses.

Check out how long the online supplier has been in business before you buy. Before you buy online, check to see if there are any testimonials at the online supplier’s website. Check to see if you have a health insurance plan that includes vision coverage.
Getting a proper fit is essential; contact lenses that are poorly fitted can lead to eyesores, eye inflammation, and eye abrasions. Be aware that extended-wear (overnight) contact lenses – rigid or soft – increase the risk of corneal ulcers, which are infection-caused eruptions on the cornea that can lead to blindness; symptoms include vision changes, eye redness, eye discomfort or pain, and excessive tearing. When the eyes are open, tears carry adequate oxygen to the cornea to keep it healthy, but during sleep, the eye produces fewer tears, causing the cornea to swell.

To be sure your eyes remain healthy you shouldn’t order lenses with a prescription that’s expired or stock up on lenses right before the prescription is about to expire; it’s much safer to be re-checked by your eye doctor. Microorganisms may be present in distilled water, so always use commercial sterile saline solutions, if you plan to use enzyme tablets in water for disinfections. Always throw away disposable lenses after the recommended wearing period.

If you’re looking for cheap contact lenses, you may find that cheap materials or other ways of cutting costs will affect the quality you’ll want for your precious eyes. No matter which lenses your doctor prescribes, be sure to ask for written instructions and follow them carefully. Shopping for contacts online will save you a lot of money; contact lenses are deeply discounted.
